Website Upgraded

Hi All,
Yesterday we completed a major upgrade of the website.  As you may know,  Ben’s former webmaster is currently in the hospital suffering from cancer.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank her deeply for her contribution to Ben’s website over the years and wish the best for her and her family.  Ben is dedicated to continuing to support her financially and otherwise in her fight to recuperate.

A new IT team has taken over management of this website.  Yesterday we completed a major upgrade and server migration.  Items of note:
  • Migrated to a completely new server, all back end software upgraded
  • WordPress upgraded from version 2.8.6 to version 4.8
  • Major speed improvements
  • New theme and design
  • Website now works and looks good on mobile devices – try it out!
  • Search functionality now works so you can search through old articles by keyword
  • Going back many years some comments were being incorrectly marked as spam – all such comments have been approved and restored
    • This was especially happening to comments containing many links, but other kinds of comments as well
    • It appears that some people had been prevented from commenting as all their comments were marked as spam – they are now free to comment again
  • The “Remember Me” checkbox now works and you can stay logged in (I don’t think it worked before)
  • Entire site secured with SSL/HTTPS – much more secure than before
  • Full server backup in a country other than Japan – website can be restored quickly in case of disruption to IT services or data loss in Japan
  • New comment system with many new features
    • Subscribe to receive all comments on a given article by email – please make sure that the emails are not going into your spam folder
    • The page will automatically check for new comments every 20 seconds and will display a button showing the number of new comments
    • Ability to sort and view either newest comments first or oldest comments first
    • Ability to vote on comments, up or down, and sort by most positive votes
    • Permanent links to comments (i.e. “bookmarks”) re-added as requested, sorry this feature disappeared for a short time yesterday
    • Shortcuts to easily add formatting to comments
      • b -> bold
      • i -> italics
      • link -> to link a word or phrase to a particular url
      • b-quote -> indentation (block quote)
      • u -> underline
      • ul -> unordered list (each item in the list must also be made into a list item)
      • ol -> ordered list (each item in the list must also be made into a list item)
      • li -> list item
      • code -> display text as monospaced computer code
      • spoiler -> create an expandable dropdown with an optional title – people will only see the content if they click to expand the spoiler box
    • Readers without gravatars are given colorful automatically generated ones
    • Hover over a gravatar or click on a commenter’s name or the information icon to see information about that person such as the total number of comments, their activity log, etc
    • Mention another comment by number (#389561) and the number will become a link to that comment – also the original commenter will receive an email notifying them that their comment was mentioned
Mention another user by name (@triode) and they will receive an email notifying them that they were mentioned
    • Links to share comments via social media (only Twitter and Google for now, Facebook to be added later)
  • New credit card based membership system coming soon – the website remains free for now
  • In the meantime, the cryptocurrency donation window has been reopened for those who wish to support Ben during this transition
Please comment on this post with any feedback or issue reports concerning the new website.  Thanks everyone!

Best wishes to Ben’s former webmaster.

Hi Triode,

It would be nice to have a full date / time stamp for ease of locating posts and for when re-joining on subsequent days.

In the previous format (and it continues with this one) people often make multiple post and now we have the option to reply to each one whereas previously the responses were added at the end and referenced the original.
This will mean that we now need to read through the whole set of messages each time we log on in case there are extra comments or responses to what we posted???

This will be cumbersome as there is no email notification – so how do we know someone has answered.
I suppose if each poster ONLY used ONE “thread” and made all their posts there, it would be tidier and easier to look for comments (and also ignore bothersome posters). But that will hinge on contributors being quite strict with how they post.

For the present, as I finish for the day I am making a new post (thread) with my time stamp (local) so that I know where to come back to tomorrow.

Thanks for your message and it is easier to read the actual messages.

One thing about making payments – I will not use crypto currencies of any sort (a bit difficult in New Zealand). I am more than happy to send a year’s advance payment from my credit card or through Internet banking to a specified account number.

Kind regards,
Alan Neeson.

My best wishes to the former host. It would be wise to change her blood acid levels to alcalic.

The new look is nice, very modern. Looking forward to the new payment system. 🙂

Yikes… overall FABULOUS new changes! Thanks triode.

It’s going to be a learning curve for some of us older doggies however.
Well that’ll be good for our “grey matter”, eh?

Hi Triode,

Wonderful work, much appreciated. I posted the following to the current Cafe, and it was suggested to post it here as well:

Hi, Cafe. These are great improvements to the look and feel of this comment section, and our collective thanks to the generously provided time and skills that were applied to bring about these changes.

However, there is a core dynamic to the site that has been somewhat impaired, and that’s the ability of the reader to keep up with what’s been posted. Maybe I’m the only one, but after I have read all the comments so far, I save out a bookmark, and use that when I return, to start from where I left off.

The problem is the new Reply capability, and the fact that it appends the replies to messages already read and scrolled past. As it is now, one would need to review all the messages already read to see if there are any new replies, and that will get increasingly burdensome as more messages accumulate. The result? Many messages unread.

My suggestion is to return all replies to the “bottom”, so that they appear in the order in which they were posted. Optimally, the Reply mechanism would auto-insert the name and time stamp of the message being replied to. But that last part may be a developmental bridge too far.

lakewinds

Another…

Also, Phoenix, I notice that you had nicely formatted your post with paragraph breaks, which are compressed out for the default message display.

So, another nice touch on our punch list would be to change the default to display the entire message.

annunaki

Wishing the best outcome for your former webmaster!

Great new web design! Congrats to the designers! 😁

Hello everyone, if you’ve not heard, an old blog mate has passed on. I’ll leave you with comments made by his girlfriend down in Melbourne Florida, where Chuck was currently living on his boat. Hope you’re all well.
********************
Hi, this is Doreen Robb, Carlos’/Chuck’s GF…

I am so sorry to have to inform all of Chuck’s friends & family that my beautiful, sweet man has left this realm and gone on to whatever is next…. he passed quickly and without apparent suffering early Saturday (7/15/17) morning between 4 & 5am of unknown causes… I’ll post here again once we have the autopsy results.
I’ll be turning this into a memorial account to allow for pictures and memories to be posted by all who have them as soon as I feel able.

Thank you all for being his friends and listening to his often wise and spiritual commentaries on world events… I know I will miss him greatly as we had made many plans together and I can only hope to honor his efforts to make this world a better place by continuing to move forward with our plans to create a sharing and loving community.

Good bye Carlos the mad-violinist… Chucky… my sweet, sweet darling.

Hello Triode,

FROM LAKEWINDS: However, there is a core dynamic to the site that has been somewhat impaired, and that’s the ability of the reader to keep up with what’s been posted.

FROM PHOENIX: If I respond to zander he will not be able to see it unless he scrolls back over all his own posts… Stupid system!

FROM NIGHTSINGER: At least there are time stamps now. I agree adding any replies to the bottom, with a timestamp, as before.

FROM ME: As before is better & simpler & more inclusive for all to participate rather than cutting off the exchange to occur between only two people in a place far away from the normal new posting timeline. Trying to get this world back on one timeline is what we’re about!

re. Datestamps: For instance, Nightsinger’s post was at 2.04pm july 20. But I had to add the month & date. How can I make a reference for others when quoting? Before it was easy. When copy & pasting & including the name, then I get a very long link – ok. So I must accept this then? Before the time stamp included the url & we only had to click on it, not drag up to the site bar & then click.

Great stuff!

zanderboy

Firstly, thank you for your responsive work.

aneeson posted at 8.26pm & 8.21pm 20 july

“Hi Café,
I did try to copy and paste Zander’s message and have it under blockquotes with my above message below it. But it would NOT post when I hit the “Post Comment” button. So I deleted the paste part and just posted my actual comments (as above)”

ME:

Well I don’t understand how it works.

That’s what happens if I highlight what I have written & then click on b-quote, so I don’t get it.

Wrote Triode a letter & it appears the ‘disappearing threads’ option is no longer. I think I can appreciate it on say the many & various topics at length on Bill Ryan’s forum at Project Avalon for instance; but somehow just keeping up is more of an issue here so it’s different, & we all want to follow what is contributed in whatever discussion – which can be done in the earlier consecutive manner.

If I set it on ‘newest’ it always reverts to ‘oldest’ after a refresh – that’s definitely no good!

Nightsinger @ 4.07pm 20 july: Notice that even tho I sorted for most recent posts first, it reverts to oldest first when I renew the page.

Effectively I have to write Nightsinger @ 4.07pm 20 july when referring to a post, ‘cos I can’t get the long url + timestamp number unless I copy the whole post, paste it to my Text/Edit doc (mac), THEN copy & paste it back here . . . ???

I do not begin to understand the mechanics or logic of any of that.
Ok so perhaps this is irrelevant; for saving elsewhere the whole ref. is there, otherwise to copy & paste into the Post Comment Box, the timestamp is sufficient.

What I do understand is that the way it was before worked really well to copy & paste directly into the chat or as a personal reference, with timestamp.

EXAMPLE:
triode
“But for heavy users who want to be sure not to miss any comments I can understand that the “stack-based” approach might be more advantageous as it allows for “bookmarking” and absolute sorting of all of the comments.”

Ok, so that’s 3 copy & pastes. The earlier version was 2, for what it’s worth.

I kinda like having the name first though, speaking for myself, but it is less convenient.

Oh well, thanks again.

zanderboy

er, my ‘b-quote’ example disappeared! I must be stoopid.

lakewinds

Triode…Thanks so much for your responsiveness and thoughtful comments. It will take some time for each of us to get used to some of the new features, I’m sure.

If we’re pretty much stuck with the comment window at the top, then I would suggest restoring the Reply buttons, which will bring up the comment entry box, but then push that Reply to the bottom of the stack. The Reply commenter should include a reference just as before, of course. But this will eliminate the hassle factor of scrolling back to the top of the page to make a comment.

I don’t have much experience with other blogs that offer comments, but I believe this one, with its 400+ accumulated comments posted towards the end of a week, is probably different from most. So our navigation needs are a little different.

Hi,
Sorry, there were a couple of server problems a few hours ago, this may have been what …..

Hi Triode,

Thank you for your latest message. I am trying again to copy & paste and then post my message.

Now, for me the only nuisance value is that to actually post a message (after having read the last on at the bottom), is that one has to go to the top and then scroll down past Ben’s original message EVERY time. Is there no way to just go to the comments panel?

Thanks for all your good work.

Kind regards,
Alan.

aneeson

Hi Triode,

Okay – it worked this time except for one thing. In the older version, if one used blockquote, not only did it indent the copied portion, but it also put it in italics (to differentiate) as well as showing great big quotation marks just before.

It no longer does that?

Cheers,
Alan.

aneeson

Hi Triode,

How do I stop getting messages to my email account every time that there is a new comment please?

If I use the “unsubscribe” link in the emails received, will it also stop me being a member of the café? Or is that a separate procedure? I do NOT want to loose my ability to be a member – just stop having messages sent (well over 50 yesterday).

Thanks,
Alan.

Hi, triode…

I’ve finally come over to Ben’s site here. But, I’m having a problem…

….posting a comment there is taking too long. My comments were perhaps 320 and 322. Every letter I press is taking 2 or 3 seconds to appear.

My last comment took something like 15 minutes to write.

It has to be Ben’s page, because this comment is printing pretty fast.

Is it bandwidth or something? Whatever it is, there have been many times the number of weekly comments near 1000. 600 to 800 are not unusual.

I can’t say it’s just me, because this comment is sailing through just fine.

Thanks, marsha

zanderboy

Hi Triode, can you fix the need to continually click on Newest after refreshing when it resets on Oldest?

zanderboy

Ooops, I think you fixed it!

zanderboy

Nope, on Ben’s main post I press refresh & it reverts automatically from newest back to oldest.

zanderboy

So here if I am posting it remains on what is chosen, but for a refresh it reverts to oldest by default.

Triode:

I received this e-mail from Caleb:

The right-wing faction on the blog has been successful in censoring any opinion that differs from their party Line

Triode has confirmed that Ben agrees I should be banned and said ” it is done

I tried copying pasting triode post to this email but was unsuccessful but it is posted on the portion of the blog related to communicating with triode

I’m sure this makes all of the propagandists , fake news disinformationists and organized team of fake personalities very happy and they will be delighted with this news

Please share this information with the blog as I no longer have access.
Thank you
Caleb

Triode and Ben,

Please, reconsider this action. I know Caleb is a real person and is one of the only people that posts under his actual real name. He is who he says he is. I have learned a lot from him over the years. I enjoy his visual thinking abilities, and especially his links to cymatics, the beautiful and complex patterns of frequencies and sounds of life.

One of the most interesting things about this blog it is one of the few places that people who have opposite political persuasions can talk to each other, even if it becomes heated and unfortunately personal at times.

Even if the political solutions and discussion tactics are not agreed on, there is much we learn from each others perspectives, research, point of views, and passions.

That is what makes this a unique place.

The world is quickly becoming one of emotionally targeting messaging where people become filtered from each other’s opinions.

Triode, when you explained the new things you have done, one was to reinstate those who had been marked as spam. Please reconsider this action. It reduces the richness of our blog.

zanderboy

Triode, I posted a reply to Carolm’s post below/above 389772. I would ask you to not get involved until we have a greater concensus.

I now use the ‘3 New Posts’ box instead of refreshing & having to reset the posting order, thanks.

I notice carolm posted four times, mkddachs posted twice – what might that be about?

phoenix9061210

I also like the fact that you can click “newest” and you don’t have to scroll past all the people narrating their position on the board. (I.e. #15 woohoo!)

Hi Triode,

Many thanks for the great work setting up and optimizing this site, and for being so responsive to the inevitable punch list from the user base.

I have one more…it’s pretty minor. The time/date stamp describes as “today” a date that is “tomorrow” for many in this worldwide readership. I’m wondering if you could display a full-format date for each comment, even the ones from “today”.

Thanks very much!

K-Puppy

Hi triode,
Please go back to past posts in the blog on any given week, month, or year and look at Calebs many posts. All he does is attack and slander others. using a confusing narrative to disuade others from posting.

Ben has warned him multiple times over the years and he continues on a nightly basis clogging up the blog with useless posts and vicious attacks on those he doesn’t like.

Talk to Ben about all of the many people who have ended their subscription because of him. Caleb’s constant attacks have gone on for years against countless individuals here.

I implore you to do some research before reinstaing calebbrennan.
Thank You Kindly,

Confused with the up-down voting!
Isn’t it only showing what we receive?
sorry for my dumb Q, here, or do I have this on a different setting perhaps?
When I voted up recently + reset the page noting change in my profile count…
I mostly gives up and up – if I give down is more of a balancing thing, never personal, as I would like to give all Ups, respecting all views. If bashing at others I will try to avoid voting altogether..from now on anyway

Hi Triode & Ben,

Regarding the Caleb issue here is a comment I made on the main thread with a suggested alternative to having him re-instated:

Hi Café,

It seems to me that the “Caleb” issue is causing somewhat of a polarisation here in the café. I for one would be pleased with less of the personal attacks so common from him.

But here is an idea / suggestion. As Caleb is in email contact with Carol, and as she is a sort of “moral conscious” on the issue, why not have him send his messages to her and she can post them in the café if she sees that they are worthy and fit for publication?

That way we will not get the plethora of inane comments and that we need to scroll past and anything that is meaningful will get posted. I know that it is a form of censorship, but I too have suffered at his expense and the café is certainly a more peaceful place without his constant bickering.

Balance is a good thing, but not at the expense of vitriol and disharmony. I know that Caleb will be able to read this (and other comments), he will just not be able to make his constant attacks unless someone (Carol?) deems the attack worthwhile or needed for a balanced view.

Does that make ay sense?

Thanks for your consideration of all our views.

Namaste,
Alan.

Please please don’t bring Caleb back
That would be torture

Why do I need such a long url with a repeat of the number when the hashtag number does it all anyway?
Why do I need the 00 Edit (likes/dislikes) can it not be put at the end with the time first, to facilitate copying without deleting later?

Triode #389863 — Hi Triode. It’s probably true that most blogs display the reader’s local time, but this site has the eccentricity of displaying Japan Time, no matter where you are.

I just went to the current discussion, and the newest entry is from Siggi, and the date is Today 12:12 AM. I’m writing this at 10:24am CDT. All posts are stamped 12 hours ahead of CDT (11 hours ahead of EDT), as always.

Hence the problem with the “today” label.

Thanks, as always…

lakewinds

And Triode, if I could trouble you one more time with this puzzler: It was mentioned a couple of days ago that Caleb had over a thousand down votes, and I was able to look that up and confirm the number as 1002 thumbs down.

The “thumbs” votes were only introduced on Monday, along with the new format. How could anybody get that many down votes in such a short time? Further, in a brief review of his posts, I can’t find any that got more than a few.

I raise this issue only because it’s a mystery. Was this ballot box somehow stuffed? Are the vote counts accurate?

Thanks!

zanderboy, carolm,
Hi,
Decision from Ben:

“Here are the rules for posting: no slander and no ad hominem attacks. Otherwise people can write what they want. So put him back on for now.”
————-Thanks triode:
———————
Hi triode!

This is the whole point relative to slander and ad hominem
I am though uncertain of the definition of slander. I understand if this is not your field of expertise, and of course needs to be addressed individual case by case I guess
Here are one legal definition.

Defamation:
“Defamation — also calumny, vilification, and traducement — is the communication of a false statement that harms the reputation of an individual person, business, product, group, government, religion, or nation”
as to
Slander – is define as a oral expression. Here they differ between slander and libel:
“Libel and slander are types of defamatory statements. Libel is a written defamatory statement, and slander is a spoken or oral defamatory statement. In this article, we’ll look at where you might find a defamatory statement, provide some different examples of libel and slander, and more.”
and
“When someone tells lies about you—whether verbally or in writing—you may wonder if you can sue. After all, lies can cause you real damage. If someone spreads personal rumors about your character, your reputation might be harmed in your community among your friends and family. If someone spreads falsehoods about your competence or skill, your professional reputation might suffer, resulting in lost business or career opportunities.”
http://communications-media.lawyers.com/libel-slander-defamation/slander-or-libel-what-is-the-difference.html
——————
RELAX – I’m not going to sue anyone! LOL
just curious.

Thank you for your comment #390211 . No need to change anything for me as I am now using the hash number and when I do a paste and copy (to a word doc for easier reading of larger items), I copy the whole thing and the date shown (even if it says “today” is Japan time or 3 hours earlier than my NZ time) and the blog site has always worked that way for me.

I know now for instance that the today will refer to 26 July for instance (or the day I copied it).

Really appreciate all your efforts and communications.

Thanks,
Alan.

I agree with Alan, keep a timestamp.

One thing that is starting to annoy me is the inability to be able to scroll on the post box window where it cuts off the top & more even after I press enter. Then it expands to include most of the post but not all (at the top in my case) unless I put my cursor at the top & click ‘arrow up’.

I’m not 100% sure I’ve got that right.

Hi Triode … I think the post date is still of value and interest, although the message number is now the best way to bookmark. If you can change that “today” thing and just display the same date format on all posts, that would be great.

Thanks for all your great and responsive work!

“One thing that is starting to annoy me is the inability to be able to scroll on the post box window where it cuts off the top & more even after I press enter. ”

I’m not seeing this behavior so again it may be something particular to your setup, I’m not sure. When I start typing or press enter in the comment box it expands as I go. If I copy and paste into the comment box then you are right that it does not immediately expand, but one touch of the arrow button fixes that and it then expands to encompass the entire message.

Hi Triode, I’m finding there is a max. size to the box & it only expands when I press enter with the cursor in it, & then lines at the top will be cut off. So I put the cursor at the top then press arrow up & all is revealed – I THINK it then cuts off the bottom.

Two more points:

As you see I pasted your whole message & I see that #390232 falls below where it is on the same line in your original post, & I see most people move it up & then space it – a procedure.

#390229 actually says nothing unless you click on it which I don’t want to most of the time & then have to scroll back up. My point is can we not have a name automatically as well?

zanderboy

Ah, I see hovering on the number produces a post caption, that’s good.

No matter how big the post is, the box will expand to accommodate. BUT it always clips off the top few lines when it is bigger/longer than a certain size. To see the top part I must put the cursor at the top then click on arrow up. That works, but then the bottom few lines are cut out.

But that is what I do! But it still cuts off the top or the bottom.

#390338 This spam is a long one, can’t you stop it?

Excellent, Triode. Thanks very much!

Right but it does not cut off the text when it is actually posted, right? So it is just a little annoying when checking to see if your copy and paste worked correctly and the comment is ready to post, is that what you mean?

Yes that’s exactly what I mean! Also from someone else:

Okay… blog tech help please.

When I paste something onto a comment box, it shows the last bit in the box and won’t scroll up so I can check to see all is right.
I’ve adjusted by posting the comment and then editing it.. and the edit text box scrolls the whole way thru the comment.

Anyone got a way to scroll thru a comment longer than the text box before posting it?

Testing

So I highlighted Testing, clicked on b-quote, & no quotes results.

zanderboy,
Block quote really just means indentation in this case, and indeed your text was indented. You can use it in combination with italics for example to differentiate it even more from surrounding text. I discussed this with Alan below in comments #389697 and #389685 . I have updated the post above to make it more clear that “b-quote” is really just indentation.
Regards,

If you look below, comment 390536, the word

testing has no indentation marks either side.

“So I highlighted Testing, clicked on b-quote, & no quotes(/indentation) results.

Am I doing something wrong?

When I highlight Testing, & click on /b-quote, I then see Testing

then I press comment, then I see Testing – with nothing. Jeez.

zanderboy

then I see Testing

but written in lower case. I can’t even write it in lower case – it just gets erased & nothing happens

zanderboy

It still gets erased when I write blockquote in lower case or higher case, with the indentation marks.

zanderboy

No, what I see in 390535 is Testing with no indentation marks!

Hi Triode … Thanks for solving our “mystery of the missing comments” yesterday.

I just encountered a fleeting bug when I tried to post a comment a few minutes ago. I pressed Submit and received an “invalid captcha” banner. Several additional attempts failed, so I opened a new instance of the site in another tab, to see if I was logged in. I was, but logged in again anyway. No sign of a captcha anywhere.

When I returned to the previous tab and pressed Submit, it went through just fine.

Are you planning on implementing captcha? I hope not, at least for messages posted by a logged-in subscriber.

And, if I may pry, what’s the status of the search for a paywall for the site? I ask only out of concern for Ben’s income.

Thanks!

lakewinds

Triode … That captcha thing seems to have been a one-time-only event, so please don’t waste your time on it. Thanks very much.

Thanks for trying. Your short cuts don’t work for me at least, not at all.
